Sylvia Sharon Johnson

Sylvia Sharon Johnson, a long-time resident of Kingsburg, California, passed away on October 8th, 2022, at the age of 83, from complications of a stroke in Sequim, Washington. Sylvia was born on March 7th, 1939, in San Francisco, and adopted by the Reverend William Buswell Johnson and Mary Selden Johnson. She graduated from Fremont High School in Sunnyvale, California and attended Wheaton College in Illinois and Reedley College in California. Upon graduating college, she worked as a bank teller and head bookkeeper at State Center Bank in Kingsburg, (later acquired by Wells Fargo). In 1961, she married Don M. Johnson, who at the time was a partner in Citizens Lumber Companies of Kingsburg, Reedley, and Selma. Don would later become Vice-President, and then President in 1988, of Johnson Lumber, inc. at 1600 Marion Street in Kingsburg. Sylvia and Don celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in November of 2021. Sylvia was the co-founder and director of Kingsburg's first pre-school, which she started in 1971. She also served as Treasurer of the Kingsburg United Methodist Women's Society from 1972 to 1974 and as President of the Kingsburg Elementary Schools PTA from 1974 to 1975. She became the first woman elected to Kingsburg's city council in 1978 and served her community in that capacity until 1990. In her spare time, Sylvia knitted, quilted, traveled, and developed a consuming interest in genealogy. Sylvia was predeceased by her parents and her younger brother, Keith. Other surviving family members, in additional to her husband, are: Darren - in New York, NY - and his former wife, Chrissy, and their two daughters, JiJi and Tessa; Devin - on Bainbridge Island, Washington - and his wife, Amy, and their two daughters, Avery and Ingo; and Dirk - in San Diego, California - and his wife, Melissa, and their son, Silas, and daughter Lola. Those who wish to remember Sylvia in a special way can make gifts in her memory to the Kingsburg Cancer Society or the Kingsburg Community Church. After the funeral service, a reception will be held at the Kingsburg Historical Society, at 2321 Sierra Street. Viewing will be held 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM Thursday, October 27th, 2022 at Salser & Dillard Creighton Chapel, 1588 Lincoln Street, Kingsburg. Graveside services will be held 10:00 AM Friday, October 28th, 2022 at Kingsburg Cemetery, 12782 E. Clarkson Avenue, Kingsburg. Imediately following graveside services friends and family are invited join the Johnson family at the Kingsburg Historical Park, at 2321 Sierra Street, for a luncheon and some fellowship.
